Police Dog Training

Everywhere you look, you will see a policeman walking with a police dog, or a fireman, and there are even military dogs now. Police dogs are usually a German Shepherd, but they are finding that other breeds can work just as well with the proper police dog training.

Police dog training is not an overnight process, but one that is quite extensive and time consuming. The training is for the handler and the dog.   The handler and the dog will be chosen from many applicants of dogs and individuals. Once a team is selected, they will already be equipped with all the skills necessary for police services.

The prospective police dog handler is usually given a probationary training over a two year period. Over the two years, he or she will go through lectures regarding dog training techniques, K-9 psychology as well as the processes of how a dog learns. They will be taught in veterinary practice, the physiological needs of a dog and legislation issues. There will be physical demands as well as demands on their mental abilities from their trainer, as well as learning how to be patient and committed to this role.

The police dog training will be just as thorough but obviously in different ways. They will develop skills to protect and attack. They will improve their natural canine behavior and instincts.

The first step in police dog training is going to be identifying what the dogs natural abilities are. Then there will be training in obedience and aggression control. It is essential that a police dog have his temperament controlled at all times, whether he be around strangers or other animals.

Police dog training is done around a particular concept and this is embedded into the dogs behavior. This is the urgency of protecting and serving the pack leader. The pack leader is identified as the police dogs handler. The primary goal of the training will be to train the police dog to adhere to the handlers commands, respond to the needs of his handler and protect him from threats of any kind.

Once the police dog training is completed, he will be able to track missing persons, or offenders through their scent. He will be able to search and track drugs, bombs or dangerous or toxic chemicals. He will be able to apprehend an offender that is trying his best to get away, and he will always protect his handler in any situation, no matter how dangerous it may be.
