Dog Potty Training

Dog potty training can seem a bit overwhelming for a new dog or puppy owner.  You think it may be very time consuming and difficult to do.  But it's not as difficult as you may think.  Here I will give you some tips to get started, and then with a bit of patience and a little understanding, you will have success and a happy dog.  There are three guidelines that you will want to base your training on to make it easier.  You can make this a fun learning adventure.  So, lets get started.

The first thing to do is find a place where you can keep your puppy confined, this is really important to do when you are away.  You don't want your puppy to have the run of the house.  You can use a particular room and block it off with a safety gate.  Many have used tile areas, or even a crate to train their dog in, which both can be very effective.  You don't want to keep him in a room with your good carpet, not the best choice for dog potty training.  When you are using the tile or crate, the cleanups will obviously be a bit easier.

The next step is to lay down some newspaper, or you may choose to use pee pads that are purchased at any store on the pet aisle.  I prefer the pads, as they hold in moisture and odor better than the paper does. The best place to put the paper is by the door that you will be taking him out.  This helps to teach your puppy boundaries and to go potty in specific areas.

Your puppy is going to have accidents, this is to be expected.  When you catch your puppy going potty inside, immediately take him outside and wait for him to finish.  This is the next step to training your puppy, teaching him that he is to go potty outside, not inside.  Never, ever hit or yell at your puppy or dog.  This makes your dog timid and afraid of you and may make him go potty in secret places.  When your puppy is roaming around freely, be sure to supervise him, and any areas that he has used to go potty, keep him away from.

Be sure to take your puppy out to go potty first thing every morning and every night before bed.   Also, don't let your dog have to much water before bedtime, this also helps to prevent nighttime accidents.  Now you are on your way to dog potty training success.
