Dog Obedience Training

Have you ever seen an owner with his dog and the dog is all over the place?  The owner is pulling and tugging their leash, yelling at them to behave or be good.  Maybe they think if they say the word "heal" because they hear other owners say it, that the dog will know what it means and do it.

Dogs that are that way don't become that way alone.  They act that way because their owner has not taken the time to provide dog obedience training for him.  Obedience training is for the owner and the dog to learn how to interact with each other, and communicate in the same language.

You can try dog obedience training on your own, but it is recommended that you have a specialist do it or follow a program that will be consistent throughout.

If you are going to go the route of an obedience school, find a school close to your home, or you can get a video program that takes you through each step.  The program will include both you and your dog.  You can have the trainer come to your home or you can take him to a school.  There are many trainers who believe that it is best to do it in their own space at home. If they are in a familiar place, they will be less distracted by all the new scents of other dogs.

When it comes to dog obedience training, it doesn't really matter if you are going to do it with some videos or have a trainer do it for you.  There are some things you should remember and apply.

  1. Make it Fun

Obedience training does not necessarily mean all work and no play.  You are basically dealing with a 2 year old child, and the attention span is going to be short.   Your dog is also not quite understanding what you are trying to teach him or why.  So you can make it fun.  When he does something positive in his behavior, then have a praise party.  You can also give treats, but this would be determined by the trainer if you have hired one.

  1. Be Consistent

This is the most important key factor in dog obedience training.  When you have decided certain rules that need to be followed, stick with them.  Don't ever give you dog a chance to doubt your intent.  Just like a child, when you tell them not climb up on something one day and the next day you allow it, sends a very mixed message that they don't comprehend.  Let your dog know the rules and you need to remember them as well.  Praise him for obeying the rule of laying next to the couch instead of getting on it, if you have a rule for him to not get on the furniture.

  1. Training Methods Used

Before you trust your dog to just any trainer or school, ask them what methods they use.  If you don't feel right about it, follow your gut and move on.  You need to provide the very best for your dog.  You don't want there to be more harm that good by the time dog obedience training is done.

You  are training your dog to have a better relationship with you, to be a good and obedient companion.  You are not sending your dog to dog military school.  If you choose the right trainer, then you and your dog will be happy.
