Dog Crate Training in 5 Easy Steps

Dog crate training is not just for house training your puppy. Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety and it is not fun for either you or your dog. If you are a working parent of your dog, then your dog probably does suffer from this.

You will need a crate large enough for your dog to stand and move around comfortably. You can make it more secure like a "den" by placing a blanket over the 3 sides and the top.

Dog crate training step 1

Have food and water in the crate for your dog along with a way to relieve himself. A couple of his favorite toys are also a benefit. Now you can grab your dog and place him in the crate, do it calmly and matter of fact. Do not shove him in there, this is not a punishment. When your dog learns to eat in there, he will feel more secure.

Step 2

When your dog gets to the point of going into the crate by himself, is when you start the "blocking" training. Blocking means "stopping access". Do not ever shove your dog, you can do this by extending your arm in a way that will block him from coming out. Hold your arm diagonally where he is not able to push or get around.

Step 3

When is relaxed in his crate, you can leave and go into another room. If he barks, then you will return and correct the behavior with a single word command, using the same command each time. You can use "stop" or "no". Leave again, and repeat this step until he is quiet. Next go outside and repeat the same steps again.

Step 4

Now you are ready to use your dog crate training while you are still in the house Go through your normal routine you would normally do when you are getting ready to go out. He will then become used to these sounds and know what to expect.

Step 5

Start leaving him inside the crate for increased amounts of time and do this randomly. You do not want to create a schedule in his mind when you leave and return. Do not talk to your dog when you go out. Just leave in a calmly and quietly.

When there are 2 dogs involved, it is best to crate them together. They are able to calm one another. Also, give them a good 30 minutes of exercise before you go. If he is tired, he will settle down easily.

Now, no more dog anxiety, neighbor anxiety or parent/owner anxiety. You can all relax and be thankful that there is such a think as dog crate training.
