Agility Dog Training
Agility is the fastest growing dog sport and the most fun
to watch. This is the kind of sport where you see a dog and his handler leave a
course celebrating and as happy as can be, you should see what they look like
when they win! This is so much fun to watch and even more fun for the dog and
his handler to participate in. A huge game for your dog. The more agility dog
training you provide, the more fun he thinks he is having with you. Never once
in your dogs mind will he ever think of this as work.
The agility dog training courses are made with obstacles
that the dog has to perform correctly. There is a judge that will predetermine
which direction and the flow that every obstacle must be taken, then the
handler will direct the dog through these obstacles just with his commands. The
handler can clap, he may cheer and he can call the dog though every obstacle on
the course. He can basically do whatever it takes but push him through it
himself.
There will be jumps with different heights, poles to
weave around and tunnels to go through. Every course will be timed, so speed is
of the essence here. The dog that finishes the fastest with the least amount of
mistakes wins.
So, the agility dog training course will need some jumps,
of all kinds and heights, according to your dogs size of course. There are
jumps such as the water jumps, the wishing well and so on. All of these will be
tons of fun for you and your dog.
You will need some climbing obstacles which are also
called contact obstacles. These are typically made of wood, and they will
include a Dog walk, Teeter, and A-Frame. Your dog will negotiate each one by
climbing over till they reach the contact zone.
You will want some weave poles which are a series of
poles standing upright for your dog to weave in and out.
Tunnels and more tunnels, this will be so much fun. These
are pipes or rigid tunnels formed into different shapes, then there is the one
with the chute... So much fun to watch!
Finally, there is the Pause Table. This is a place where
your dog takes a break from it all for a total of 5 seconds, then he is on to
the next great obstacle. You would think the dog would appreciate this, but
typically, they find it just a bit annoying.
So, if you are thinking about dog agility training, make
sure you have the time and the money as well as the room. Then you and your dog
are ready for the time of your lives.
